New Record Surplus

The Norwegian trade surplus in goods reached a new record high of 21.9 billion kroner in September. Exports of crude oil and natural gas amounted to 25.0 billion kroner and traditional goods to 18.6 billion in September. Imports came to 22.9 billion.

The accumulated trade surplus for January through September was 158 billion kroner, compared with 51 billion during the corresponding period last year. The most important reason for the high figures is still the high oil prices.

Crude oil for 23 billion kroner

The export value of crude oil came to 23.2 billion kroner in September. This is a 70 per cent increase from September last year, which is due to the increase in the oil prices. The estimated average export price for September 2000 was 303 kroner against 172 kroner in September 1999. The daily export volume last month, which was 2.6 million barrels, is the same as for September last year.

Traditional goods, seasonally adjusted

Adjusted for seasonality, the value of external trade in goods showed an increase of 0.7 per cent for the three month-period from July to September compared with the period from April to June. Imports increased by 2.9 percent.

Increased Exports of Chemical Products

Exports of chemical products for the period from January to September came to 19 billion kroner. This was an increase of 2.8 billion or 17.1 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Increased Exports to Europe and North-America

The total exports of traditional goods for the period from January to September show an increase of 19.9 billion kroner or 14.9 per cent. The Norwegian exports to the EU increased by 15.5 per cent and to all of Europe by 16.2 per cent. Exports to France and Ireland have increased by 23.9 and 37.6 per cent, respectively, whereas the exports to the UK stand at only 4.9 per cent. The overseas exports increased by 18.2 per cent to the USA and by the modest 1.4 per cent to Japan. Exports to our neighbour country Sweden increased by 14.5 per cent.
