Still high export surplus

Traditional exports of goods amounted to 20.1 billion kroner in January - the highest value ever for one single month. The export figures were nearly the same as in November last year. Seasonally adjusted figures showed a decline of 0.8 per cent from December to January. Imports totalled 22.0 billions.

Norway exported natural gas for 5.0 billion kroner in January this year. This is the highest value ever and an increase of 72.2 per cent compared with January 2000. The rise of value was mainly due to higher prices. However, as a part of total exports gas exports were not especially high compared with previous years.

Exports of crude oil came to 100.4 million barrels in January 2001. This is an increase in volume of 7.9 per cent against the same month last year. The value amounted to 22.4 billion kroner, which is a rise of 19.0 per cent.

The trade surplus is still high and was 25.6 billion kroner.

Seasonal adjusted figures

Seasonally adjusted figures showed an increase of as much as 6.7 per cent for the period November 2000 to January 2001 compared with the previous period of three months. The import value in the same period declined by 2.4 per cent. From December to January exports of traditional goods decreased by 0.8 per cent, while imports fell by 3.5 per cent.

Increased exports of manufactured and chemical products

Exports of miscellaneous manufactured articles1 increased by 257.4 million kroner - 28.7 per cent. Exports of chemicals rose by 626.9 millions - 31.2 per cent.
