Increased imports of traditional goods

Norway imported for NOK 71.9 billion in the 1st quarter and exports amounted to 134.3 billion. The trade surplus was 62 billion compared with last year's 52 billion.

Exports of crude oil, condensates and natural gas were 76.5 billion. The deficit of the trade balance looking at traditional exports minus imports shows a slight increase. Exports of traditional commodities amounted to 57.8 billion.

Fish and cars

Imports of food, beverage and tobacco (SITC 0-1) totalled 4.7 billion in the 1st quarter this year, while the exports of SITC 0-1 products came to 8.9 billion. Fish imports increased by 300 million.

Imports of crude material, fuel and oil (SITC 2-4) summed up to 8.7 billion, where oil products increased by 2.1 billion and imports of ore by 3.1 billion. The value of imports of electric current was more than half a billion. Total exports for these groups amounted to 6.9 billion.

We imported manufactured goods (SITC 5-9) for 58.4 billion - a 9 per cent increase from the 1st quarter 2000. Car imports increased by 20 per cent. The value of telecommunication equipment increased by 637 million, for computers by 562 million and electric machines by 518 million. Exports of manufactured goods were 39.5 billion.

Exports to Eastern Europe

Since 1993 the annual exports to the previous Comecon countries have increased considerably. Fish still dominate, especially regarding Russia and Ukraine. Exports to Poland represent a lot of manufactured goods as well. Exports of natural gas to the Czech Republic started in 2000.
