Exports and imports decreased

Norwegian exports of goods in August came to NOK 41.9 billion and imports to 22.9 billion. Exports decreased by 9.6 per cent and and imports by 4.0 per cent compared with August of last year. The trade surplus for the month amounted to NOK 19.0 billion.

Exports of crude petroleum - crude oil, natural gas and condensates - came to NOK 25.8 billion, a hefty 61 per cent of total exports. Crude oil amounted to NOK 19.9 billion compared with 25.5 billion in August of last year. Natural gas increased from 3.2 to 5.4 billion. The decline in crude oil exports was due to lower prices as well volume.

Adjusted for seasonality, the export value for traditional goods decreased by 3.7 per cent and the import value by 1.6 per cent from July to August. For the three-month period from June to August exports declined by 1.4 per cent and imports by 1.5 per cent compared with the previous three-month period.

Lower exports of manufactures of metals, petroleum products and fish

Exports of traditional goods amounted to NOK 16.2 billion in August, 1.5 billion or 8.4 per cent less than in August of last year. Exports of manufactures of metals, refined petroleum products and fish declined by NOK 470, 450 and 360 million, respectively.

Trade balance

The accumulated trade surplus for January to August was NOK 160 billion, an increase of 7.5 per cent compared with the corresponding period of last year. Exports of crude petroleum came to NOK 205 billion. The trade deficit for traditional goods was 46 billion.

Imports from USA increased

Norwegian imports of traditional goods from the USA amounted to NOK 15.3 billion in the first eight months of 2001. This is an increase of 16.8 per cent compared with the same period of last year. Exports to the USA amount to NOK 10.9 billion, a decrease of 8.9 per cent. Also, 10 million tonnes of Norwegian crude oil have been shipped to the USA, amounting to an additional NOK 17.1 billion.

The figures are exclusive of ships and mobile oil platforms, the same as for traditional goods on the import side. For exports, traditional goods are also exclusive of crude oil and natural gas and as of January 2001 also exclusive of natural gas condensates.
