Last year's surplus down NOK 10 billion

In the year 2001 Norwegian exports of goods amounted to NOK 514 billion of which crude oil, natural gas and condensates came to NOK 300 billion. With imports of 284 billion, the trade surplus ended up being 229 billion against 239 billion in 2000.

The main reason for last year's decline in trade surplus of 10 billion was lower prices for crude oil and refined oil products. The average price per barrel was NOK 217 last year compared with 252 in 2000. On the other hand the export value for natural gas increased by 13 billion and prevented the decline from being higher. The value of export of natural gas was 61 billion last year.

Both traditional exports and imports showed minor changes compared with the year 2000. However, the deficit was slightly higher than in 2000.

Seasonally adjusted figures

Sesonally adjusted figures for imports of traditional goods show a decline of 2.6 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter. For exports the decline was 2.3 per cent.

Increased exports for machinery and chemical products

The total export value of traditional goods which amounted to NOK 214 billion showed small changes compared with last year. Within the different groups the picture is more varied. The export value increased the most for electrical machinery, general industrial machines and transport means. Exports of organic and inorganic chemical products and liquid propane and butane increased as well. The export value of refined oil products - also included in traditional goods - went down by as much as NOK 8.4 billion in 2001 compared with 2000.

Increased imports of traditional goods

Last year imports of traditional goods came to NOK 284 billion, 3.2 billion more than the previous year. Imports of electric currrent increased considerably.
