Export value decreased

Norway exported goods for NOK 39.7 billion in May, a decrease of 5.8 billion compared with May last year. The import value this month was 22.0 billion. This brings the trade surplus for May to NOK 17.7 billion.

An explanation for the decrease is the total export value of crude oil, NOK 16.8 billion in May this year, a decrease of 5.0 billion from May 2001. Exported barrels of crude oil were about the same, while the price per barrel decreased considerably, NOK 264 per barrel in May 2001 compared with NOK 203 in 2002. The export value of natural gas increased to NOK 6.1 billion in May 2002. The export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensate was 23.2 billion, a decline of 11.5 per cent compared with May last year. Since the release of figures for April the March figures for natural gas have been corrected.

In the first five months Norway has exported goods for NOK 200 billion and imported for 112 billion. Both the export and import value are down compared with January - May last year, 11.4 and 7.6 per cent respectively.

Export of oil products and telecommunication apparatus

The export value of traditional goods amounted to NOK 16.5 billion, 2.8 billion down from May 2001. Many commodity groups showed a decline in export value. Oil products, which are included in traditional goods, declined by 70 per cent, and ended up at NOK 580 million in May 2002 The reason for this was much less exported quantities of naphtha and gas oils in May this year compared with May last year. Among the commodity groups machinery, the export value of telecommunication apparatus was down by NOK 275 million.

Aircraft and machinery

Norway imported traditional goods for NOK 22.0 billion in May, a decline of 4.0 billion compared with May last year. The import value of larger aircraft was 2.1 billion in May 2001. There were no such imports in May this year. Disregarding the aircraft imports the decline in total value decreased by1.9 billion or 8 per cent compared with Mai 2001 and May 2002. Among the main group machinery, imports of machinery for special industries, telecommunication apparatus and electrical machines declined.
