Exports down - less quantity of oil

Norwegian exports in June came to NOK 33.8 billion, which is down 8.8 per cent compared with June 2002. With the monthly imports up to NOK 22.3 billion the trade balance reached a NOK 11.5 billion surplus. For the same month last year the surplus was NOK 15.5 billion.

For exports, the value dropped by NOK 3.3 billion from June 2002 to June this year. The value of exports of crude oil and natural gas was NOK 2.5 billion less. The price of crude oil for June was NOK 194 per barrel. The quantity, however, dropped by 15 per cent and June exports counted 72 million barrels. For natural gas - prices are stable, but also here the quantity declined and was 4 077 million m3 for June.

Traditional exports down 4.5 per cent

Traditional exports in June were NOK 15.9 billion, NOK 748 million less than in June last year. One reason is the NOK 765 million decline of refined mineral products, where quantity exported dropped to near half of the June 2002 quantity. Prices seemed to remain at the same level. When comparing exports of refined products the first half of 2003 with same period in 2002, the export value increased by as much as 24.8 per cent.

For fish and fish products the value was down NOK 268 million to NOK 1.7 billion for June 2003. Exports of machinery and transport equipment were NOK 542 million lower, ending at NOK 3.2 billion.

Some commodities increased in value - such as manufactured goods, and specifically metals, iron and steel by NOK 714 million, up to NOK 4.7 billion in June. Chemicals increased by NOK 179 million to NOK 2.2 billion. Liquefied propane and butane June exports increased by NOK 54 million from June 2002 to NOK 581 million.

Seasonally adjusted figures show an increase

Seasonally adjusted figures for the 3-month period April-June for exports of traditional goods show an increase of 4.5 per cent compared with the period January-March. Traditional imports had an increase of 0.6 per cent for the corresponding periods.

Imports of electric current increased

During the first half of 2003 the value of imports increased by NOK 763 million, or 0.6 per cent to NOK 135 billion compared with same period last year. For electric current imports were NOK 2.2 billion higher, up to a NOK 2.7 billion value for these six months. Fish imports declined by NOK 925 million or 44.1 per cent to about NOK 1.2 billion. Also in the group machinery and transport equipment - some commodities showed a significant decline in import value.
