High trade surplus

Exports of goods came to NOK 68.0 billion, and imports to NOK 36.9 billion in March. The Norwegian trade surplus was NOK 31.1 billion, an increase of 19.7 per cent compared to March last year.

The total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates came to NOK 41.1 billion in March. The export value of crude oil alone came to NOK 28.5 billion, an increase of 23.1 per cent. The crude oil price averaged NOK 411 per barrel March this year , compared with NOK 329 per barrel in March 2005.

Seasonally adjusted figures: Increase last quarter

Seasonally adjusted figures show a 1.7 per cent increase in imports of goods, excluding ships and oil platforms, for the period January to March 2006 compared with the previous three months period.

Figures also show an increase in imports of 5.5 per cent from February to March this year.

Similar figures for exports excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas for the last two months show an increase of 5.9 per cent.

Increase in both exports and imports

The export value of goods excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas came to NOK 72.1 billion the three first months of this year. This is an increase of 22.0 per cent compared with the corresponding period in 2005.

In the first quarter of 2006 the exported value of fish reached NOK 8.2 billion. This is an increase of almost NOK one billion, or 12.6 per cent.

The export value of refined mineral products came to NOK 8.9 billion. The value has nearly doubled since first quarter of 2005. The export value of propane and butanes increased by NOK 2.0 billion, or 84.7 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Imports of goods, excluding ships and oil platforms, came to NOK 95.1 billion in the first quarter of 2006, 16.3 billion or 20.7 per cent more than the first quarter last year.

The import value of manufactured goods increased by NOK 3.2 billion, or 22.3 per cent compared to the first three months of last year. This increase came mainly from more import of non-ferrous metals and metals in general.

Import of machinery and transport equipment increased NOK 7.5 billion or 26.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2006.. General industrial machinery and equipment and machinery specialized for particular industries were the main contributors to this rise, with respectively NOK 1.7 and NOK 1.3 billion. Furthermore, the value of imported road vehicles increased by nearly NOK one billion from the first quarter last year.

From January to March the import value of clothes and footwear increased by NOK 514 billion, compared with the first quarter in 2005.
