Increased exports of machinery

In September 2006, exports of goods came to NOK 60.7 billion, while imports came to NOK 34.5 billion. The Norwegian trade surplus was NOK 26.2 billion, an increase of 14.5 per cent compared to September last year. Exports of machinery increased by almost NOK 1 billion.

In September, the total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates came to NOK 34.5 billion. The export value of crude oil came to NOK 24.2 billion, an decline of 1.8 per cent compared to September last year. This is due to lower quantity, the crude oil price averaged NOK 401 per barrel in September 2005, compared with NOK 406 per barrel September this year.

Increase in import of goods

Seasonally adjusted figures show a 1.1 per cent increase in imports of goods, excluding ships and oil platforms, for the period July to September 2006 compared with the previous three months period. Corresponding figures for the last two months show an increase of 3.7 per cent from August to September this year.

Similar figures for exports excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas for the last two quarters show a decrease of 1.3 per cent. From August to September there is a decrease of 3.1 per cent.

Increase in exports of metals and machines

The export value of goods excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas came to NOK 26.2 billion, an increase of almost NOK 3.3 billion, or 14.51 per cent compared with September 2005. In the same period, exports of non-ferrous metals and machinery and transport equipment increased by respectively NOK 1.5 billion and NOK 1.1 billion.

From January to September 2006 the value of exported fish reached NOK 23.2 billion. This equals an increase of NOK 3.3 billion, or 16.9 per cent from the same period last year. The export value of refined mineral products came to NOK 28.7 billion in this period, an increase of nearly 10 billions compared to 2005. The export value of propane and butanes came to NOK 2.6 billion, or an increase of 29.9 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Increase in imports of machines

Imports of goods, excluding ships and oil platforms, came to NOK 34.5 billion in September 2006. This equals a rise of NOK 4.0 billion or 11.7 per cent from September last year.

Several groups contributed to the rise in imports this September. Among others was general industrial machinery, with NOK 1.7 billion. Also, metalliferous ores and metal scrap and the value of imported road vehicles increased by respectively NOK 720 million and NOK 670 million from September 2005 to 2006.

The European Union, our main trade region

A total of NOK 202.1 billion, or 69.8 per cent of our import excluding ships and oil platforms from January to September 2006, originated from the EU. Furthermore, NOK 156.7 billion, or 71.6 per cent of Norwegian export excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, natural gas and condensates is directed to the EU.

Regarding the total EU-trade imports from Sweden, this year was slightly higher than 1/5 and exports slightly higher than 1/6 so far. Moreover, imports from Germany amounted to a little less than 1/6, while exports amounted to a little less than 1/7 of the total trade with this region.
