Record high imports in October

In October 2006, exports of goods came to NOK 66.6 billion. Imports came to NOK 39.8 billion,
and is the highest ever recorded. The Norwegian trade surplus was NOK 26.81 billion. [1Corrected 12:05]

In October, the total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates came to NOK 38.1 billion. The export value of crude oil came to NOK 26.3 billion, a decline of 8 per cent compared to October last year. This is due to lower quantity, the crude oil price averaged NOK 382 per barrel in October 2005, compared with NOK 387 per barrel in the corresponding period in 2006.The export of gas is nearly at the same level as in October last year, whereas the condensates rose with about NOK 400 million, or more than a third.

Seasonally adjusted figures

Compared with the previous three months period, seasonally adjusted figures show a 2.6 per cent increase in imports of goods, excluding ships and oil platforms, for the period August to October 2006.. Corresponding figures for exports excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas, show an increase of 2.3 per cent.

Similar figures from September to October show a growth of 2.9 per cent for imports and 1.2 for exports.

Exports of metals up and refined mineral products down
The export value of goods excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, natural gas and condensates came to NOK 28.5 billion, an increase of almost NOK 4.1 billion, or 17 per cent compared with October 2005.

Detailed figures show quite a strong rise in exports income for some goods, and reduced income for others. Exports of non-ferrous metals jumped by NOK 2.2 billion (70 per cent). Equivalent exports of chemicals rose by NOK 900 million and machinery and transport equipment by NOK 860 millions. In contrast, the export value of refined mineral products dropped by NOK 1 billion (9 per cent) in this period. Exports of fish was NOK 12 millions lower than October 2005, though the overall figures show that Norway has exported more fish in the period January to October 2006 than in 2005.

Increase in imports of cars, machinery and telecommunication

Imports of goods, excluding ships and oil platforms, came to NOK 39.8 billion in October 2006. This equals a rise of NOK 7.9 billion, or 25 per cent from October last year.

The commodity group machinery and transport equipment contributed to almost half of this growth,
almost NOK 3.2 billion (27 per cent). Among others there was an increase in the imports of cars, industrial machinery and telecommunication equipment. Furthermore, there was an increased import of metalliferous ores and metal scrap of almost NOK 1 billion (57 per cent), miscellaneous manufactured articles of NOK 620 million and manufactures of metals of about NOK 400 million.
