Decrease in trade surplus since March last year
The export value of goods came to NOK 68.3 billion in March 2007 compared with NOK 71.1 billion in March last year, a decrease of 4 per cent. Imports amounted to NOK 41 billion, an increase of 11.3 per cent. The Norwegian trade surplus came to NOK 27.2 billion, a decrease of 20.4 per cent compared with March last year.
The decline in the trade surplus was mainly due to a slight fall in exports of crude oil and natural gas. In March 2007, the total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates amounted to NOK 38.1 billion, a decrease of NOK 6.5 billion compared with March last year. The export value of crude oil came to NOK 25.9 billion, a decrease of 8.8 per cent. The crude oil price averaged NOK 388 per barrel, compared with NOK 412 per barrel in March last year.
Increase in exports of non-ferrous metals
The export value of goods excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas was NOK 30.2 billion in March, compared with NOK 26.5 billion in March last year, an increase of 13.7 per cent. This development was mainly due to a substantial increase of the export value of non-ferrous metals of NOK 2.2 billion, or 52 per cent.
The export value of liquefied propane and butanes fell by NOK 767 million, or 53 per cent, while the export value of the commodity groups 'machinery specialized for particular industries' and ‘general industrial machinery’ increased by NOK 285 and 240 million respectively. The export value of fish increased by NOK 426 million, or 14 percent, compared with March last year.
Increase in imports of metals, machinery and vehicles
In March, imports of goods excluding ships and oil platforms amounted to NOK 41 billion, compared with NOK 36.8 billion in March 2006, an increase of 11.3 per cent.
This development was mainly due to an increase of the import value of the commodity groups ‘metalliferous ores and metal scrap’ of NOK 1.4 billion, or 74 per cent. Other commodity groups with an increase in imports value are ‘telecommunications apparatus and equipment', 'electrical machinery’ and 'road vehicles', with increases between NOK 305 to 520 million.
