Lower trade surplus

Exports of goods came to NOK 805 billion in 2007, while imports came to NOK 460.6 billion. The Norwegian trade surplus was NOK 344.4 billion, a decrease of 7.1 per cent compared with 2006.

The decline in the trade surplus is due to fact that the preliminary figures for 2007, excluding ships and oil platforms, show an increase in exports and imports of 3.8 and 13.7 per cent respectively.

In 2007, the total export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates amounted to NOK 469.8 billion, a decrease of NOK 3.8 billion compared with 2006. The export value came to NOK 309.7 billion for crude oil and NOK 152.7 billion for natural gas, an increase of 0.2 and 4 per cent respectively. The crude oil price for 2007 averaged NOK 427 per barrel, compared with NOK 417 per barrel in 2006.

Increase in exports of metals and machinery

The total export value of goods excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas was NOK 335.2 billion in 2007, compared with NOK 302 billion in 2006, an increase of NOK 33.2 billion, or 11 per cent. This development was mainly due to a substantial increase in the export value of non-ferrous metals of NOK 9.9 billion, or 19.1 per cent. Machinery specialized for particular industries, iron and steel, and manufactures of metals increased by NOK 3.3 billion (37.4 per cent), NOK 2.8 billion (27.2 per cent) and NOK 2.5 billion (36.8 per cent) respectively.

Increase in imports of machinery and vehicles

In 2007, imports of goods excluding ships and oil platforms amounted to NOK 460.6 billion, compared with NOK 405.1 billion in 2006, an increase of NOK 55.5 billion, or 13.7 per cent. This development was mainly due to an increase in the import value of the main group 'machinery and transport equipment' of NOK 20 billion, in which the export value of road vehicles amounted to NOK 6.2 billion. Other important commodity groups were general industrial machinery, electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances and telecommunication apparatus and equipment.

Seasonally adjusted figures: Increase in imports

Adjusted for seasonality, the export value of crude oil, natural gas and condensates increased by 8.5 per cent from the third quarter of 2007 to the fourth quarter of 2007. Similar figures for exports excluding ships, oil platforms, crude oil, condensates and natural gas show a growth of 4.6 per cent, while imports excluding ships and oil platforms experienced an increase of 4.2 per cent.
