Increased imports of services

From the 1st to the 2nd quarter of 2011 the import of services grew by 14.1 per cent, while exports of services, excluding figures from enterprises operating in ocean transport, increased by 2.4 per cent.

For the first two quarters, import of services amounted to NOK 58.9 billion. In the 2nd quarter services related to oil and gas exploration accounted for almost one fourth of total imports and grew to NOK 8 billion from NOK 6.8 billion the previous quarter. Other services contributing to the growth in imports were rail and land transport services, and building and construction projects.

Uneven development in exports of services

So far this year, Norway’s exports of services amounted to NOK 53.5 billion. The development in exports of services from the 1st to the 2nd quarter has been uneven. There was a 10.3 per cent increase in export of business services from the previous quarter. At the same time, a number of services exported from Norway decreased. Among the services that contributed to the decline were air transport and rail and land transport. Although the above services only accounted for 6 per cent of total exports, the decrease was large.

With regard to imports of services from abroad, the mining and quarrying industry has been predominant over the past quarters. The import from this sector was up 32 per cent from the 1st quarter. External trade in services, by continent. Per cent

EU countries excluding the North are the largest trading partners

For the first two quarters, EU countries outside the Nordic region have been Norway’s most important trade partners. So far this year, Norwegian non-financial enterprises exported services for NOK 17 billion to this region and imported services for around NOK 24 billion.

Export figures for the shipping industry are not included in this publication because the statistics on external trade in services are undergoing a change in methodology. The figures for the shipping industry will be included when the readjustments have been made.

About the statistics

From the 1st quarter of 2011 statistics on external trade in services will be published quarterly.

This publication uses SIC2007 (Standard Industrial Classification) for grouping trade industries, while previously published articles used SIC2002. This can lead to some changes in the grouping of trade industries and difficulties may arise when comparing these two units.

The statistics on external trade in services for non-financial enterprises are part of the statistical basis for Norway’s Balance of Payments. These statistics do not include trade in services for financial enterprises, households, non-profit organisations and public administration. The figures presented here are therefore not comparable with the figures presented in Balance of Payments - Current and Capital Account, cf. About the statistics .

The statistics on external trade in services were established in 2005 when Norway’s central bank discontinued their foreign payment statistics, which were an important basis for the Balance of Payments. Figures on external trade in services regarding geographical specification are also included.

The purpose of the statistics on external trade in services is to provide information about the service flows between Norway and other countries. Income and expenditure in connection with exports and imports of services to and from other countries are important economic indicators both in describing structural changes and in monitoring economic trends (cf. About the statistics on limitations and other conditions).
