Trade in services increases

In comparison with the first quarter of 2014, trade in services increased in the first quarter of 2015. Total exports rose 16.2 per cent and import of services rose 23.6 per cent.

In the first quarter of 2015, Norwegian non-financial enterprises exported services for NOK 56 billion, while importing services for NOK 57 billion. This means a deficit in the balance of trade in services of almost NOK 2 billion.

Compared to the fourth quarter of 2014, exports of services in the first quarter of 2015 had a decline of 11.1 per cent or NOK 7 billion, and imports of services saw a decline of 5.6 per cent or NOK 3 billion.

Exports of services related to sea and coastal transport amounted to NOK 20 billion, which corresponds to 36.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2015. Exports of business services total almost NOK 11 billion, corresponding to 19.2 per cent.

Imports of services in the first quarter of 2015 were dominated by three groups of services, which amount to 54 per cent of the total imports; Services related to oil and gas exploration excluding surveying; Business services; Supporting and auxiliary transport activities, travel agency activities, which amounted to approximately 18 per cent or NOK 10 billion each.

Transportation and storage sector important for trade in services

In the first quarter of 2015, enterprises within the transportation and storage sector exported services for NOK 27 billion, which equals 49.1 per cent of the total exports. Enterprises within Professional, scientific and technical activities were the second largest contributor with an export amounting to NOK 8 billion.

Enterprises within transport and storage imported services for NOK 17 billion in the first quarter of 2015, equal to 30.5 per cent. The mining and quarrying sector imported services for NOK 14 billion or 23.9 per cent of the total import.

Trading partners in Europe important

Norwegian non-financial enterprises exported services to European countries in the first quarter of 2015 amounting to NOK 26 billion, equivalent to 47.5 per cent of the total export. Exports of services to Asia and North and Central America amounted to 19.9 and 14.7 per cent respectively.

A total of 42.8 per cent of imported services in the first quarter of 2015 came from EU except Nordic countries, corresponding to NOK 24 billion. Countries from Asia and North and Central America delivered 11.9 and 12 per cent respectively of Norway’s import of services in the first quarter of 2015.
