Lower export prices and importvolumes

The export price index for goods excluding ships and oil platforms was 11.2 per cent lower in the first quarter of 2001 than in the last quarter of 2000. Imports were 3.1 per cent higher. The seasonally adjusted index for the volume of imports shows a decrease of 4.8 per cent from the previous quarter.

The decrease in the export price index is mainly due to lower crude oil prices which show a decrease of 19 per cent.

The increase in the import price index is mainly due to an increase in electricity prices of 53 per cent.

Adjusted for seasonality, there was an increase in the volume of exports of traditional goods of 2.1 per cent from the last quarter of 2000. This increase can be related to higher exports of paper and paperboard, chemicals, metals and telecommunication apparatus.

The seasonally adjusted index for the volume of imports of traditional goods shows a decrease of 4.8 per cent. The indices show lower imports of foodstuffs like meat, dairy products, eggs and products used in animal feeding.

The development from the 1st quarter of 2000 to the 1st quarter of 2001

The level of the export prices for traditional goods was 5.8 per cent higher than in the corresponding quarter of 2000, the main factor being higher prices of electricity.

The indices for the main commodity groups show higher exports of fish and metals.

The figures are exclusive of ships and mobile oil platforms, the same as traditional goods on the import side. For exports, traditional goods are also exclusive of crude oil and natural gas.
