Car sales for NOK 123 billion in 2015

Published:

Enterprises in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles had a turnover of NOK 215.1 billion in 2015, of which NOK 123.1 billion was from car sales.

Sales of trucks, semi-trailers and other types of motor vehicles accounted for NOK 22.1 billion of the turnover, as shown in the statistics Wholesale and retail trade, breakdown of turnover by product. Altogether, trade services of motor vehicles ended with over two-thirds, 67.5 per cent of the industry’s total turnover. This is therefore by far the most lucrative activity for this type of enterprise.

Maintenance and repair for NOK 32.7 billion

Figure 1 show how the turnover was distributed among the different product groups for enterprises in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles. In addition to trade services of motor vehicles, two product groups had larger parts of the total turnover: maintenance and repair services of motor vehicles, and trade services of motor vehicle parts and accessories. Maintenance and repair gave the enterprises a turnover of NOK 32.7 billion, while sales of parts and accessories generated NOK 29.5 billion. These two product groups accounted for 15.2 and 13.7 per cent respectively of the total turnover in the industry.

Sales related to motorcycles ended at NOK 2.9 billion in 2015. This is 1.4 per cent of the total revenue. The remaining turnover of NOK 4.8 billion, equivalent to 2.2 per cent, came from other product groups.

Car dealerships and repair shops in combination

Each industry is divided into several industry groups that specify the activity of the enterprises. Figure 2 displays the turnover distribution for the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles industry group. These enterprises had a turnover of NOK 64.9 billion in 2015. As illustrated in the figure, over half of the turnover for this type of enterprise came from sales of motor vehicles. A total of 36.1 per cent was from maintenance and repair. The explanation is that the enterprises tend to have a combination of car dealerships and repair shops.

The industry of the enterprises with multiple local kind-of-activity units is determined by priority of the enterprise’s value added, number of employees or turnover within the various activities in which the enterprise operates. We do not always know the enterprises’ value added, so the number of employees is often the decisive factor for the industrial classification. Repair shops usually require significantly more employees relative to turnover than is the case for car sales. Thus, a number of enterprises are placed in the maintenance and repair group, despite the fact that car sales are the greatest source of turnover.

What is the difference between product activity and industrial classification?

Product activity and industrial classification are similar to each other both in name and categorisation, and it is not always easy to see what the difference really is. In Statistics Norway, we use the Standard Industrial Classification based on the international standard NACE. The industrial classification helps us place the enterprises in the industry that shows their main activity. We use the product classification standard Classification of Products by Activity (CPA), also an international standard, to show what types of products an enterprise gets its turnover from. An enterprise located in the industry 45.1 sales of motor vehicles can have sales from all product groups. Most will come from 45.1 trade services of motor vehicles, but it may also have turnover from another product group, for example 45.2 maintenance and repair of motor vehicles.
