There was a decline of 1.4 per cent, or more than 700 enterprises, within wholesale and retail trade from 2008 to 2009. At the same time, the industry employed about 3 000 fewer persons in 2009 compared with the previous year. This corresponds to a decline in employment of 0.8 per cent.
The nearly 53 000 enterprises within wholesale and retail trade employed about 370 000 persons in 2009. These enterprises had a combined turnover of NOK 1 239 billion, which is NOK 41.8 billion, or 3.3 per cent, less than in 2008.
Increase in retail turnover
The turnover within retail trade rose by more than NOK 10 billion, to nearly NOK 394 billion in 2009. While there was a small increase of 0.3 per cent in employment, the number of enterprises fell by 1.6 per cent. There were slightly more than 27 100 enterprises in 2009, and these employed just under 215 200 persons.
Decline of NOK 45 billion for the wholesale trade
The combined turnover for the enterprises within wholesale trade was just over NOK 694 billion in 2009. This is a decline of over NOK 45 billion, or 6.1 per cent from 2008. There were nearly 17 900 enterprises in 2009, and these employed just under 111 000 persons. This corresponds to a decline of 1.6 per cent in the number of enterprises and 2.4 per cent in the number of employed persons.
Lower turnover within trade and repair of motor vehicles
The nearly 8 000 enterprises in the industry had a combined turnover of about NOK 150 billion and employed slightly more than 43 800 persons in 2009. Turnover was thus reduced by 4.5 per cent and employment by 2.2 per cent compared to 2008. The number of enterprises was almost unchanged.
Preliminary figuresPreliminary figures for structural business statistics are only published on enterprise level. In general, the figures for enterprises will show other values than the figures for local kind-of-activity units. This is due to the fact that an enterprise registered with its main activity in one industry may have local kind-of-activity units in other industries. Only figures for number of enterprises, persons employed and turnover on a 3-digit industry level are published. The data are not as thoroughly revised as they will be when the final figures are published in May 2011. Deviation between preliminary and final figuresComparisons between preliminary and final figures for the wholesale and retail trade in 2007 and 2008 show that the final figures for number of enterprises were 0.8 and 0.4 per cent lower respectively. The final figures for turnover were 0.2 per cent higher in 2007 and 0.2 per cent lower for final figures in 2008. The employment figures were 0.6 per cent higher for final figures in 2007 and 0.8 per cent lower in 2008. |

The statistics is now published as Business statistics.
Additional information
The statistics have figures for both local KAUs and enterprises, but preliminary figures are published only on enterprise level.
The figures for enterprises will deviate from the figures for local KAUs. The reason is that enterprises that are registered with principal activity in one industry may have local KAUs with activities in other industries.
