Slightly weaker growth for wholesale and retail trade

Turnover within wholesale and retail trade increased by 3.7 per cent from 2011 to 2012. This is a slightly weaker growth than the previous year. There was a small increase in the number of enterprises and employed persons.

The figure shows the growth in turnover for wholesale and retail trade during the past ten years. The turnover was well above trend in 2007 and 2008, and the effect of the financial crisis is clearly seen, with a sharp drop to below trend in 2009. Over the last three years, the wholesale and retail trade has experienced relatively steady growth.

Trade and repair of motor vehicles was the industry with the greatest decline in growth, with 2.3 per cent in 2012 and 8.8 per cent in 2011. Growth in retail sales remained fairly stable, however. With a slight decrease compared to 2011, the growth in 2012 was 3.1 per cent. Turnover in the wholesale trade increased by 4.4 per cent in 2012.

In total, the wholesale and retail trade industry consisted of just under 51 200 enterprises that employed in excess of 367 700 people in 2012.

Comparisons between preliminary and final figures for the wholesale and retail trade in 2010 and 2011 show that the final figures for number of enterprises were 0.6 and 0.3 per cent lower respectively. The final figures for turnover were 0.3 per cent higher in 2010 and 0.5 per cent lower for final figures in 2011. The employment figures were 0.1 per cent lower for final figures in 2010 and 1.2 per cent lower in 2011.
