Slight drop in the commodity consumption

Seasonally adjusted index of commodity consumption declined by 0.9 per cent from January to February. The fall can be attributed to the decrease in the purchase of vehicles in February. Other consumption groups increased slightly.

After a strong increase in the seasonal adjusted figures in January, the sales of cars went down by almost 11 per cent in February. According to data from the Norwegian Road Federation 9 793 new passenger cars were registered in February against 12 685 cars in January. Despite the decrease from January to February, car sales in February 2007 were 22 per cent higher than in the same period a year ago.

The consumption of electricity and heating fuels went up by 0.6 per cent in February in comparison to the previous month. On the other hand, the level of consumption of electricity was lower compared to the same period in 2006.

The consumption of foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco increased by 0.5 per cent from January to February. The consumption of alcoholic beverages contributed to this increase by 2.3 per cent. Food consumption had a slight increase of 0.4 per cent.

Consumption of other goods rose by 1.9 per cent from January to February. This was mainly due to increased consumption of furniture and household appliances, photo and electronic appliances.

Method differs from the index of retail sale

The index of commodity consumption describes the development in household consumption of goods, while the index of retail sales measures the development in retail sales. As opposed to the index of retail sales, the index of commodity consumption has a wider choice of commodities. Calculation of the index of commodity consumption is based on information from the index of retail sales plus purchase of cars (initial registration), sales data from petrol stations (petrol and other goods) and consumption of electricity and heating fuels. This may result in deviations in the development of the two indices.

The index of commodity consumption uses the same definitions and methods of compilation as the quarterly national accounts, and thus serves as an indicator of household consumption of goods in the quarterly national accounts.

Since Statistics Norway gives high priority in timeliness of release of statistics, the index of commodity consumption may have to rely on preliminary estimates in some cases. This implies that such estimates will be replaced in the subsequent releases.
