Retail sales up NOK 5.8 billion

Retailers, with the exception of motor vehicles and petrol, increased sales by NOK 5.8 billion during the first six month in 2002 compared with the corresponding period in 2001. This is equivalent to an increase of 5.6 per cent. The retail sales index rose by 5.4 per cent during the same period.

Total retail sales in Norway were almost NOK 109 billion in the first six month this year. Retail sale in non-specialized stores, which mainly include grocery stores, rose by 6.2 per cent from the first six month in 2001 to the first six month in 2002. Other retail sales of new goods in specialized stores increased by 5.8 per cent in the same period. This sector consists of clothing, shoes, electrical goods, furniture and building materials. Stores selling pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles increased sales by 6.2 per cent during this period. The group retail sales not in stores rose by 2.6 per cent.

1.6 billion more in the third period

In May and June (3r d period) 2002, retail sales increased by 1.6 NOK billion or 4.3 per cent. Stores selling pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles increased sales by 6.4 per cent. Retail sale in non-specialized stores, which mainly include grocery stores, rose by 4.4 per cent in May and June 2002 compared with the corresponding period last year. Other retail sales of new goods in specialized stores rose by 4.2 per cent.

Decline in sales of motor vehicles and petrol

Sale of motor vehicles and petrol declined by NOK 2.7 billion in the first six months of 2002 compared with the same period in 2001, a decrease of 3.6 per cent. Figures in May and June (3r d period) 2002 indicate a decrease of 1.0 per cent compared with the corresponding period the year before.
