About 487 000 establishments at beginning of 2012
There were 487 138 registered establishments in Norway as per 1 January 2012. Most establishments were within wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.
The county of Finnmark had the lowest number of establishments, with about 7 700. Most establishments were to be found in the region of Oslo and Akershus, where almost 24 per cent of all establishments were localised.
Many establishments within retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles
Fourteen per cent of the establishments belonged to retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles. Agriculture, forestry and fishing were represented in 13.5 per cent of the establishments. The least establishments were to be found within activities of extraterritorial organisations and bodies. Only 11 establishments belonged to this economic activity.
Many establishments belonging to sole proprietorships and private limited companies
Thirty-eight per cent of the establishments belonged to private limited companies and 47 per cent belonged to sole proprietorships. About 87 per cent of the local units were linked to enterprises with only one local unit.
Nearly 60 per cent of the establishments had no employees, but this varies considerably between the economic activities. Within agriculture, forestry and fishing, almost 87 per cent of the establishments had no employees at the beginning of the year. Within financial and insurance activities, only 1 out of 4 establishments had no employees.

EstablishmentAn establishment is defined as a local kind of activity unit, which mainly conducts activities within a specific industry group. Relationship between enterprise and establishmentAn enterprise is a legal unit. Examples of enterprises are limited companies and sole proprietorships. An enterprise can be linked to more than one establishment if it is involved in activities in different geographic locations or within different industries. |
