Most shareholders are men

Seven out of ten shareholders and owners of personally owned enterprises were men as per 1 January 2011. Twelve per cent of the owners in personally owned enterprises were immigrants or Norwegian-born to immigrant parents.

Constant gender distribution amongst shareholders

About 73 per cent of the shareholders in private and public limited companies were men. This share has been relatively constant in recent years. More than 84 per cent of sole shareholders were men.

More women owners in personally owned enterprises
Seventy-two per cent of the 188 000 sole proprietorships as per 1 January 2011 were owned by men. Almost 13 per cent of the owners in sole proprietorships and 12 per cent of owners in all personally owned enterprises were immigrants or Norwegian-born to immigrant parents. The share of female owners has increased from 24 to 28 per cent during the period 2004-2011.

Few industries dominated by women

Women were represented among the owners in near half of all general partnerships and general partnerships with shared liability. However, there are few industries where the majority of the owners are women. About half of the sole proprietorships within human health and social work activities had female owners, and seven out of ten owners within other service activities were female. In all other economic activities the majority of owners were men.

The statistics include owners of personally-owned enterprises and personal shareholders in public and private limited companies as per 1 January 2011.

At this point in time, there were 170 148 personally-owned enterprises in Norway. These enterprises include the following organisational forms: sole proprietorship, general partnership and general partnership with shared liability. These enterprises had a total of 187 775 owners; 50 763 women and 135 477 men.

The statistics comprise all public and private limited companies from the enterprise statistics at 1 January 2011 that are included in the stock statistics 2010. The statistics are limited to the 1 129 988 shareholders identified by personal identification number (personal shareholders) who owned shares on 31 December 2010. The figures include all enterprises except enterprises involved in agriculture, forestry, fishing or public administration.
