Entrepreneurs in business enterprise sector, 2002-2004

44.4 per cent of the male and 37.8 per cent of the female establishers in 2002 established personal owned enterprises that are still active in 2004.

49 per cent of the establishers with education within the area Natural Sciences, Vocational and Technical Subjects have established enterprises that are still active in 2004, compared to only 34 per cent of the establishers with education within Humanities and Arts and 32 per cent of those within Teacher Training and Pedagogy. Owners with lower secondary education have the highest survival rate at 45.3 per cent. Most establishers have no education past upper secondary education. The establishers with 1-3 years education past college have the lowest survival rate at 38.9 per cent.

The enterprises owned by establishers with immigrant background from non-Western countries have larger survival rate than the enterprises owned by the immigrant population with background from western countries. These survival rates are respectively 40 and 36 per cent. There is very little distinction between the survival rate for first generation immigrants and their descendants.

Women bring about growth in employment while men bring about growth in turnover

Of the personal owned enterprises that are still active in 2004 women constitute about a quarter of the owners. These female owners bring about 31 per cent of the growth in employment, but only 19 per cent of the growth in turnover.

Younger establishers have a lower survival rate then the older. But of the personal owned enterprises that are still active in 2004, there has been more growth in enterprises with young establishers then with older. Largest growth in turnover and employment is to be found in enterprises with owners between 25 and 34 years.

The non-Western immigrant population constitutes 6 per cent of the establishers in personal owned enterprises that are still active in 2004, but bring about 9.3 per cent of the growth in employment and 8.3 per cent of the growth in turnover. If we distinguish between first generation immigrants and their descendants we can see that the first generation immigrants bring about the most growth in employment. 9.2 per cent of the owners of enterprises that are still active in 2004 are first generation immigrants, and they stand behind 12.1 per cent of the growth in employment.

Establishers with lower or upper secondary education are, as mentioned, the groups with the highest survival rates, and constitute together 62 per cent of the establishers of enterprises that are still active in 2004. These groups also are behind totally 72 per cent of the growth in turnover.
