Entrepreneurs of limited companies

One of two new established enterprises have only one entrepreneur. Half of the entrepreneurs had positions on a board or as general manager in other enterprises. 22 per cent of the entrepreneurs were owners of personally owned enterprises.

Statistics Norway has published statistics on owners ofin personally owned enterprises since 2004. With help from the Shareholder Register we have identified the entrepreneur of limited companies. The Shareholder Register contains all shareholders in Norwegian limited companies. The shareholders are identified by personal identification number (persons), organisation number (enterprises), vps account (account number at the Norwegian Central Securities Depository) (can be either person or enterprise) or name (can be either person or enterprise).

An enterprise can have one or more entrepreneurs. The entrepreneur can be a person, an enterprise or a combination of different types of shareholders. A limited company can have one or several shareholders. The entrepreneur may be the person who had the business idea, a shareholder or the person who runs the enterprise.

The method used to identify the entrepreneur aim at identifying the shareholders in an enterprise that have the role as either general manager or member of the board, or who have a considerable share of the capital stock. If a new enterprise is owned by other enterprises and the other enterprises are owned solely by private individuals, the entrepreneur is identified among these individuals. If the other enterprises do not only have private individuals as shareholders, the entrepreneur will be among the enterprises that are shareholders in the new enterprise.

In this statistics, the term entrepreneur covers both private individuals and enterprises.

In 2004, 10 848 private and public limited companies were set up in Norway. 9 883 (91 per cent) of the enterprises are present in the Shareholder Register and constitute the basis to identify the entrepreneur. More than half of the enterprises only have private individuals as shareholders, 22 per cent only have enterprises as shareholders, while 13,4 per cent are owned by a combination of private individuals and enterprises.

The majority of the enterprises have few entrepreneurs. 48.3 per cent of the new enterprises have one entrepreneur and 31.5 per cent have two. Only 1.4 per cent of have five or more entrepreneurs.

In 75.3 per cent of the new enterprises the entrepreneur is a private individual, whereas 14.9 per cent have other enterprises as entrepreneurs. 3.6 per cent of the new enterprises have both persons and enterprises as entrepreneurs.

Half of the entrepreneurs held board positions or were general managers in other enterprises

About 7 900 of the limited companies that were started in 2004 have a person among the establishers. In total, 14 600 persons are entrepreneurs this year. 68.5 per cent of these are entrepreneurs of enterprises that only have persons as owners, 16 per cent of enterprises that are owned by a combination of private individuals and other enterprises, while 12 per cent of enterprises that are owned solely by other enterprises.

Half of the entrepreneurs had general manager or board member positions in other enterprises on 1 January 2004, while 22 per cent of the entrepreneurs were owners of personally owned enterprises.

2.5 per cent of the entrepreneurs have immigrant background from non-Western countries, 2 per cent from Western countries, while 95 per cent have no immigrant background. 83 per cent of the entrepreneurs are men. If we look at the female entrepreneurs, 79 per cent are entrepreneurs of enterprises that are solely owned by persons. The corresponding figure for men is 66 per cent.

54 per cent of the entrepreneurs have upper secondary education and more than 36 per cent have higher education. Every third entrepreneur is between 35 and 44 years of age. 14.5 per cent are aged 55 or older and only 3 per cent are aged 16 to 24.

1880 enterprises are identified as entrepreneurs. In total, these enterprises have set up 1773 limited companies. Two out of three of these are entrepreneurs in enterprises that only have enterprises as owners. 26 per cent are entrepreneurs of enterprises that are owned by both private individuals and enterprises.

Most of the entrepreneurs have few employees. Almost half of them have no employees and 15 per cent have 1-4 employees. Only 4 per cent of the enterprises that are entrepreneurs have 250 employees or more.
