Most entrepreneurs are men

Most entrepreneurs are men, both in personally owned companies and in limited companies. The largest share of women entrepreneurs are found in the personally owed companies.

28 299 personally owned companies, with a total of 30 618 entrepreneurs, were set up in 2007. Two out of three entrepreneurs were men. The number of entrepreneurs who are not Norwegian citizens was 3,9 per cent.

In limited companies, 16,6 per cent of the entrepreneurs in 2006 were women. 36 per cent of all entrepreneurs were between 35 and 44 years old in. A larger share of the women than the men were younger than 25 years, while a larger share of the men than the women were 45 years or older.

In this statistics, the term entrepreneur of limited companies covers both private individuals and enterprises. In 2006, 18 082 private and public limited companies were set up in Norway, 90 per cent of the enterprises are present in the Shareholder Register for 2006. In 2007, 16 724 private and public limited companies were set up in Norway, of which 83,8 per cent are present in the Shareholder Register for 2007.

The entrepreneur in personally owned companies is defined as the owner(s) of the enterprise at the time of set up.
