One in ten newly-established enterprises survived five years

One in ten enterprises that were established in 2008 were still active in 2013. The number of persons employed in the surviving enterprises increased threefold in the same period.

There were a total of 46 567 newly-established enterprises in 2008, of which 13 361 were still active 5 years later.

Highest survival rate for limited liability companies

Limited liability companies had the highest rate of survival from 2008 to 2013, with 45.8 per cent. The survival rate for sole proprietorships was 21.9 per cent.

The probability of an enterprise surviving increased with the size of the enterprise in the start-up year. While 58.5 per cent of the enterprises with 5 or more persons employed in 2008 were still in business in 2013, only 28.4 per cent of the enterprises with fewer than 5 persons employed in 2008 were still active in 2013.

High growth enterprises and gazelles

High growth enterprises are enterprises with average annualised growth greater than 20 per cent per annum over a three-year period. Growth can be measured by turnover or by the number of employees. There were 19 877 enterprises with 10 or more employees as of 1 January 2011, of which 9.1 per cent were high growth enterprises measured by growth in turnover, and 4.2 per cent were high growth enterprises measured by growth in the number of employees. Limited liability companies constituted 96.5 per cent of the high growth companies.

A total of 658 newly-established enterprises in 2008 and 2009 had 10 or more employees as of 1 January 2011, and were still in business three years later. Of these enterprises, 21.9 per cent were gazelles measured by turnover growth and 13.2 per cent were gazelles measured by employment growth. Almost all gazelles were limited liability companies.
