All-male workforce in third of enterprises

Almost half of all enterprises as of 1 January 2011 had both male and female employees. Seventeen per cent of enterprises had only female employees and 36 per cent had only male employees.

The largest share of enterprises with only male employees was in transport and storage and construction, with six out of ten enterprises. Almost half of the enterprises in other service activities and health and social work activities had exclusively female employees.

Most of the enterprises had few employees; nine out of ten enterprises had fewer than 20 persons employed.

In more than half of all newly established enterprises in 2011, all employees were men, whereas one fifth had only women in their staff. Newly established enterprises also had few employees, with eight out of ten having fewer than five.

Secondary education most common

Half of all enterprises as of 1 January 2011 had no employees with a higher education level than secondary school. In one out of ten enterprises, all employees had taken a university degree. The highest share of enterprises that only had employees with education from university was in professional, scientific and technical activities, as well as information and communication, with 36 and 30 per cent respectively.

About the statistics

The statistics include enterprises (except enterprises in agriculture, forestry, fishing and public administration) with employees and describe the characteristics of the employees. Employees are defined as persons working for the employer for more than four hours a week. Persons with more than one job may have been counted as an employee in more than one industry. The statistics do not include owners in personally-owned enterprises, i.e. proprietors in sole proprietorships and partners with joint liability and unlimited liability.
