435 093 enterprises in 2012
A total of 435 093 enterprises were active in Norway in 2012. These enterprises had a total of 1.9 million persons employed and a total turnover of NOK 5 347 billion.

The figures are taken from the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises at Statistics Norway and include all figures except general government.
Private limited companies dominated
Ninety-two per cent of all enterprises were private limited companies or sole proprietorships. The private limited companies, which made up 41 per cent of all enterprises, accounted for 77 per cent of the total turnover and 74 per cent of all persons employed. Fifty-one per cent of all enterprises were sole proprietorships, and these generated 3 per cent of the total turnover and had 12 per cent of all persons employed.
Highest turnover within mining and quarrying
Enterprises within mining and quarrying and wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles had the highest share of total turnover (26 per cent). Wholesale and retail trade also had the largest number of persons employed (20 per cent) and constituted 12 per cent of all enterprises. The largest share of enterprises was found within agriculture, forestry and fishing (17 per cent).
Most enterprises were small
A total of 87 per cent of the enterprises had less than 5 persons employed. One half a per cent of all enterprises had 100 or more persons employed, but these accounted for 52 per cent of the total turnover and 40 per cent of all persons employed.
