Wholesale and retail trade contributed most

Enterprises in wholesale and retail trade accounted for 19 per cent of total employment, of which 22 per cent came from private limited companies. Enterprises in manufacturing and construction each contributed 12 per cent to total employment.

Enterprises in wholesale and retail trade had a turnover of NOK 1 430 billion, and their counterparts in mining and quarrying had NOK 1 311 billion in turnover in 2013, with the result that half of the turnover in Norway came from enterprises in these two economic activities.

Most enterprises are sole proprietorships

Sole proprietorships and private limited companies constituted 49 per cent and 43 per cent of the enterprises respectively. Consequently, private limited companies and sole proprietorships made up a whopping 92 per cent of the enterprises in 2013. Most enterprises were in agriculture, forestry and fishing, which made up 16 per cent, while construction and wholesale and retail trade each constituted 12 per cent of the enterprises. In agriculture, forestry and fishing, 89 per cent of the enterprises were sole proprietorships, and these also made up 50 per cent of the construction enterprises.

Predominantly small enterprises

Enterprises had predominantly few employees in 2013. A whopping 87 per cent of the enterprises had less than 5 employees. Agriculture, forestry and fishing constituted 18 per cent of the small enterprises. A paltry 0.5 per cent of the enterprises employed 100 or more people, and 19 per cent of that came from wholesale and retail trade.
