More enterprises
The number of newly established enterprises increased in 2010 for the first time since 2006. In 2010, a total of 46 000 enterprises were established; an increase of 9 per cent compared to the previous year.
The number of newly established limited liability companies increased even more, with 12 per cent more enterprises established in 2010 compared to 2009. Almost nine out of ten newly established enterprises were limited liability companies or sole proprietorships.
Almost every economic activity had more newly established enterprises in 2010 compared to 2009. The largest growth was found within Construction (+857 enterprises), Wholesale and retail trade (+444) and Professional, scientific and technical activities (+432). The largest number of newly established enterprises was found within Professional, scientific and technical activities (6 710), Constriction (6 261) and Wholesale and retail trade (5 685).
The variation in the number of newly established enterprises in the period 2001-2010 can mainly be attributed to the variation in newly established limited liability companies (figure 1).
Enterprises as of 1 January
The number of enterprises as of 1 January increased slightly by less than 1 per cent from 2009 to 2010. Most enterprises as of 1 January 2010 were found within Wholesale and retail trade (15 per cent of total) and Construction (14 per cent). For 1 January 2011, the preliminary figure shows a decrease of less than 2 per cent from 2010 (the final figure will be available in 2012).
Fourteen per cent more enterprises were closed down in 2009 compared to the previous year. The largest increase in enterprise closures was within Construction, Professional, scientific and technical activities and Manufacturing.
The figures include all enterprises except enterprises involved in agriculture, forestry, fishing or public administration. The figures for new enterprises in 2010 have been updated compared to the quarterly statistics on new enterprises. The increase in the number of enterprises from 1 January 2009 to 1 January 2010 is partly explained by a revision in the methodology.
