Increase in continental shelf tax
After two years of reduction in assessed taxes on operations on the Norwegian continental shelf, assessed taxes increased in 1999 by NOK 15 billion or 144 per cent from the previous year.
Total taxes assessed on operations on the continental shelf amounted to NOK 25 billion in 1999, compaired with NOK 10 billion in 1998. Special taxes amounted to NOK 14 billion, an increase of NOK 9 billion, while taxes on ordinary income increased by NOK 6 billion to NOK 11 billion.
Oil and gas extraction and pipeline transport
Taxable ordinary income for companies engaged in oil and gas extraction and pipeline transport came to NOK 38 billion in 1999. This is an increase of NOK 21 billion from the year before. By comparison, the basis for calculating special taxes was NOK 27 billion, or an increase of NOK 17 billion.
The increase in the tax base is mainly attributed to higher gross income. The production of crude oil has increased, while the production of natural gas was at about the same level as the year before. The prices of crude oil and natural gas were on average higher than in 1998.
Foreign companies
Foreign companies engaged in maintenance, repair and various activities supporting the Norwegian extraction companies, had NOK 427 million in assessed taxes in 1999. This is an increase of NOK 82 million or 24 per cent from the year before.
