Information sector
The statistics are expanded and comprise enterprises established in addition to bankruptcy proceedings for the information sector. The information sector includes the ICT sector and the content sector. The content sector comprises publishing activities, information services, radio and television and motion picture and video activities. Since an international delimitation of the content sector does not exist, the statistics for the content sector is based on a national delimitation. The foundation for the definitions are, however, copied from notes published by UN and OECD. Read more about this in "About the statistics". The definition of ICT wholesale are changed from the statistic year of 2003 and this create a break in the time series for the ICT sector and the information sector. ) |
In 2003 there were registered 348 bankruptcy proceedings within the information sector, 232 in the ICT sector and 116 in the content sector. Changes in the delimitation of ICT wholesale in 2003 make it difficult to compare the number of bankruptcy proceedings within the ICT sector and information sector with earlier years. In the content sector the number of bankruptcy proceedings increased by 23.4 per cent from 2002 to 2003. In the entire economy an increase of bankruptcy proceedings were registered at 16,8 per cent from 2002 to 2003.
4 207 new enterprises were established within the information sector in 2003. Among these 3 132 enterprises were established in the ICT sector and 1075 in the content sector. Within the content sector there has been an increase of new established enterprises of 10 per cent each year since 2001.
For the whole economy the number of new established enterprises increased by 9.9 per cent from 2001 to 2002 and 0.8 per cent from 2002 to 2003.
For each bankruptcy proceeding within the ICT sector in 2003, there were established 13.5 new enterprises. Correspondingly there were established 9.3 new enterprises for each bankruptcy proceeding within the content sector. For the entire economy there were established 7.4 enterprises for each bankruptcy in 2003. The ratio of new established enterprises and bankruptcy proceedings has decreased within the ICT sector, the content sector and for the whole economy in the period from 2001 to 2003.
Among the industries in the ICT sector most enterprises are established within ICT consultancy services and for each bankruptcy proceeding there has been established 17.8 new enterprises in 2003. Within the content sector there has been established most new enterprises within motion pictures and video activities. In 2003 there were established 13 new enterprises for each bankruptcy within this industry.
For enterprises that are affected by bankruptcy data on employment are available only and for new established enterprises data on employees are available only. Figures on employment include both owners and employees while figures on employees comprise all persons that work for the employer. 845 employed were affected by bankruptcy within the information sector in 2003, 640 of them in the ICT sector and 205 in the content sector. In the new established enterprises within the information sector 1 015 employees were registered in 2003. Among these 760 were registered in the ICT sector and 255 in the content sector. There were also registered 170 more employees in new established enterprises than the number of employed in bankruptcy proceedings. The difference in the number of employed would be greater if the owners were present in the new established enterprises.
