Many bankruptcies in ICT consultancy services

The number of bankruptcy proceedings within the ICT sector increased from 129 in 2000 to 187 in 2001. In the ICT Consultancy services the number of bankruptcies increased by 66 in 2001, a growth of 160 per cent compared with the previous year.

For all industries, however, the number of bankruptcy proceedings has been relatively stable in the period 1995-2001. But in the ICT sector the number of bankruptcies increased during theperiod 1995-1997 - and in the period 1997-2000 - on average - there were 130 bankruptcies per year. From 2000 to 2001 the number of bankruptcies increased to 187 and the ICT sector's portion of all bankruptcies increased from 3.6 to 5.2 per cent. The development from 2000 to 2001 within the ICT consultancy services has been dramatic. In the period 1997-2000 there was an average of 40 bankruptcies yearly for this industry, and in 2001 the number increased to 106. Within the ICT wholesale it was a decline of 14 bankruptcies or 17 per cent from 2000 to 2001. In the telecommunications and ICT Manufacturing industries the number of bankruptcies from 2000, but is approximately at the same level as the years 1995-1999. From 2000 to 2001 the increases for the two industries were 5 and 1.

Twice as many employees was affected by bankruptcies

In 2001 584 employees in the ICT sector were affected by bankruptcy against 289 in 2000. The ICT sector's part of employment concerning all bankruptcies increased from 3.5 per cent in 2000 to 6.3 per cent in 2001. The increase is due to the ICT Consultancy services and telecommunications where 302 and 86 employees were hit by bankruptcy in 2001. In 2000 only 0.34 per cent of the employed in the ICT sector were affected by bankruptcy. This was considerable lower than in other industries. Simplified calculations show that this variable has increased to about 0.7 per cent in 2001. This is at the same level as industries such as Construction, Wholesale and Manufacturing.

Great increase in value of turnover

The value of turnover in bankruptcies in the ICT sector was 1170 million in 2001 and 604 million in 2000. The ICT sector's part of this changed from 7.6 per cent in 2000 to 11.6 per cent in 2001. The telecommunication and ICT Consultancy services caused these changes. The value of turnover in bankruptcy proceedings within telecommunication was 1 million in 2000 and 413 million in 2001 and the value in ICT consultancy services changed from 34 to 217 million..
