Declining number of bankruptcies
The number of bankruptcies in the 3r d quarter declined by 16 per cent compared to the 2n d quarter this year. This was an increase of 15 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Altogether 3 993 bankruptcy proceedings have been commenced so far this year. 35 percent of the bankruptcies are personal bankruptcies. Most bankruptcies take place within wholesale and retail trade, real estate, renting and business activities, construction and hotels and restaurants.
Regional differences
The whole country, except the counties Vest-Agder, Nordland, Rogaland and Møre og Romsdal, has experienced a decline in the number of bankruptcies compared to the 2n d quarter this year. The largest decline has been in the counties Akershus and Sogn og Fjordane.
While the country as a whole has experienced an increase by 15 percent in the 3r d quarter this year compared to the same period in 2002, the following counties have experienced an increase by 50 per cent or more: Nordland 82 per cent, Østfold 60 per cent and Buskerud 50 per cent. The counties Telemark, Sogn og Fjordane, Oppland, Oslo and Vestfold, on the other hand, have had a decline in the number of bankruptcies.
Enterprise bankruptcies increase the most
Compared to the 3r d quarter in 2002 the number of bankruptcies in enterprise increased by 18 per cent, while the number of personal bankruptcies increased by nine per cent.
There has been an increase in the number of bankruptcies by 57 percent within hotels and restaurants. The number of enterprise bankruptcies increased by 77 per cent while the number of personal bankruptcies decreased by 13 per cent. In construction there has been an increase by 25 per cent in both enterprise and personal bankruptcies. Within wholesale and retail trade the number of enterprise bankruptcies has increased by 9 per cent while the number of personal bankruptcies has declined by 11 per cent. This is a total increase of 5 per cent. The largest increase in personal bankruptcies, 88 per cent, is within real estate, renting and business activities. The total increase in number of bankruptcies for this activity is 17 per cent.
