Increasing number of bankruptcies

A total of 5 223 bankruptcy proceedings were commenced in 2003 - an increase of 16.8 per cent compared with 2002. This is the highest number of bankruptcies since 1992.

The number of bankruptcies came to 5 749 in 1992 and 5 158 in 1993. Since 1993 the number of bankruptcies has been about 3500 until 2002 when it increased to 4 473.

Large regional differences

Only the county of Oppland had fewer bankruptcies in 2003 than in 2002 - a decrease of 1.5 per cent. The counties of Buskerud, Finnmark, Vest-Agder and Hordaland recorded an increase of 44, 43, 41 and 33 per cent.

20 per cent of all bankruptcies in 2002 were recorded in Oslo and the number rose to 1 032 in 2003 - an increase of seven per cent from 2002. Other counties with less than 10 per cent increase in the number of bankruptcies were Sogn- og Fjordane, Telemark, Rogaland and Troms.

Largest increase within mining and quarrying

The largest relative increase from 2002 to 2003 was within mining and quarrying, where the number of bankruptcies increased by 200 per cent, from five to 15.

The increase has also been substantial within fishery -171 per cent. Within financial intermediation the increase has been 57 per cent and within hotels and restaurants 36 per cent.

25 per cent of all bankruptcies in 2003 were recorded within wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles, motorcycles and personal and household goods, 19 per cent within real estate, renting and business activities and 17 per cent within construction.
