Number of bankruptcies increases again

After a steady decrease in the number of bankruptcies the past three years, there was an increase of 18.5 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2006 compared with the same period of the year before. In spite of this rise, the total number of bankruptcies in 2006 was 14 per cent lower than in 2005.

The total number of bankruptcies last year was 3 032. The counties of Oslo and Akershus had one third of them. These are also the two counties where approximately 30 per cent of all Norwegian enterprises are situated. The number of bankruptcies fell in almost all counties. In the county of Nordland, there was a drop by 29 per cent, the highest decrease in per cent, while the county of Oslo had the highest drop in total, with a decline of 137 bankruptcies compared with 2005.

Less bankruptcies in 2006 in total

Two of three bankruptcies were related to enterprises (exclusive sole proprietorships) and last year, there was a drop of almost 10 per cent in them compared with 2005. One of three bankruptcies related to enterprises were within wholesale and retail trade.

In 2006, there were 1 080 bankruptcies related to sole proprietorships and personal bankruptcies, and this number went down by 22 per cent compared with the year before. One third of the sole proprietorships that went bankrupt, were within construction.

but an increase in the fourth quarter

In the fourth quarter of last year, there were 788 bankruptcies. This is a growth of 18.5 per cent compared with the same period of the year before.
