Number of bankruptcies still on the rise
In the third quarter of 2009, the number of bankruptcies was 1 028. This is an increase of 23 per cent compared with the same period last year.
Østfold and Nord-Trøndelag were the only counties where the number of bankruptcies went down. The largest rise in percentage terms was in the counties of Hedmark and Sogn og Fjordane, with 147 and 100 bankruptcies more respectively. With 40 bankruptcies more, the rise in absolute figures was largest in Oslo, followed by Hedmark with 28 bankruptcies more than in the third quarter of 2008.
Increase in number of bankruptcies related to enterprises
Eight out of ten bankruptcies, in total 818, were bankruptcies related to enterprises (excl. sole proprietorships). The number rose by 40 per cent compared with the third quarter last year. The largest climb was in construction, with 59 bankruptcies more.
The remaining 210 bankruptcies were related to sole proprietorships and personal bankruptcies. In this group there were 42 bankruptcies less, which corresponds to a decrease of 17 per cent compared with the same period last year. The number of bankruptcies only went up in manufacturing and wholesale and retail trade.
Sixty-eight per cent of the bankruptcies in the third quarter were limited companies. Norwegian-registered foreign companies accounted for 10 per cent. The number of Norwegian-registered foreign companies that went bankrupt rose by 35 per cent compared with the third quarter last year.
