Ownership and roles in industry, 1 January 2006

On 1 January 2006, the general manager and chairman of the board was the same person in 61 per cent of all limited companies. However, in larger enterprises this is more unusual. In enterprises with 250 employees or more, only 3.4 per cent of general managers are also chairman of the board. In addition, general managers are members of the board (but not chairman) in 24 per cent of the enterprises.

90 per cent of general managers hold at least one board position

Only one out of ten general managers is not represented on a board. 52 per cent hold one board position, 25 per cent hold two or three, while slightly more than 2 per cent hold ten or more. Men generally hold more board positions than women.

77 per cent of the 120 000 general managers in Norwegian limited companies are general managers in one company only. This is the case for 90 per cent of female general managers and 95 per cent of male. About 50 persons, all men, are general managers in 20 companies or more.

500 people have more than 20 board positions

57 per cent of chairmen in Norwegian limited companies only hold this board position. This is the case for about half of the male chairmen and three out of four female chairmen.

Seven out of ten board members only have one board position. However, some people hold as many as 106 board positions.

Concentration of owners

As of 1 January 2005, the board and management are represented as owners in about 75 per cent of the companies, and own 39 per cent of the share capital in the companies in which they are represented. Non-financial enterprises have owner interests in 30 per cent of the companies and own 81 per cent of the share capital in these companies. Norwegian private individuals form the third largest ownership type and are represented in 27 per cent of limited companies. However, these owners own a very small proportion of the capital.

Ownership in Norwegian public and private limited companies

63 per cent of the companies are wholly owned by private individuals, while 19 per cent are wholly owned by other enterprises. Only 10 per cent are owned by both enterprises and private individuals.

44 per cent of the limited companies only have one owner (shareholder), and 26 per cent have two owners. Only 0.5 per cent of limited companies have 100 owners or more.
