Three out of four shareholders are men

Three out of four personal shareholders in Norwegian limited companies were men at the beginning of 2007. In 85 per cent of all private limited companies with only one shareholder, the owner was a man.

The statistics comprise all public and private limited companies at 1 January 2007 which are included in the Shareholders’ register of the Directorate of Taxes. Public administration, defence and the primary industries are not included. Furthermore, the statistics are limited to shareholders identified by personal identification number (personal shareholders) who owned shares on 31 December 2006. The companies may have shareholders who cannot be identified by personal identification number (mostly other enterprises). A total of 901 642 persons were identified as shareholders in 96 264 private limited companies and 277 public limited companies. 224 905 other shareholders were excluded (of which 167 159 were enterprises identified by organisation number). In addition, 51 361 limited companies were excluded because they did not have personal shareholders (43 761 enterprises) or they were missing from the Shareholders’ register (7 600 enterprises).

Personal shareholders in private and public limited companies

In total, 73 per cent of the personal shareholders in private and public limited companies were men in the beginning of 2007. Furthermore, 12.2 per cent of the male shareholders and 5.9 per cent of the female shareholders in private limited companies were sole owners. However, most shareowners have small shareholdings. 38.7 per cent of the shareholders in private limited companies and 99 per cent of the shareholders in public limited companies own less than 1 per cent of the company.

Personally owned enterprises

Three out of four owners of personally owned enterprises were men. Furthermore, in 54 per cent of the general partnerships and 58 per cent of the general partnerships with shared liability men were sole owners. In comparison, in 11 per cent of the general partnerships and 15 per cent of the general partnerships with shared liability women were sole owners.
