One of four owners are women
About one out of four shareholders of limited companies and owners of personally owned enterprises were women per 1st January 2008. Female immigrants and Norwegian-born to immigrant parents were overrepresented amongst the owners of personally owned enterprises.
The share of female owners in personally owned enterprises has increased from 24 per cent in 2004 to 26 per cent in 2008.
10 per cent of the owners in personally owned enterprises were immigrants and Norwegian-born to immigrant parents. Female immigrants and Norwegian-born to immigrant parents were overrepresented amongst the owners since they count for about 9.5 per cent of the female population in Norway, but amounted to 11 percent of all female owners in Norway. One of three female owners of enterprises in the accommodation and food industry were immigrants and Norwegian-born to immigrant parents.
Almost three out of four personal shareholders in private and public limited companies were men at 1 January 2008. The largest shareholders were also men since they amounted to over 84 per cent of the shareholders with 75 per cent shares or more. Still, most shareholders were small. Less than 40 per cent of shareholders in private limited companies hold under 1 per cent of the share. 99.9 per cent of shareholders in public limited enterprises had less than 1 per cent of the share.
There were 158 377 personally owned enterprises (general partnership, general partnership with shared liability and sole proprietorships) per 1 January 2008. These enterprises were owned by 175 356 owners. The statistics comprise all public and private limited companies at 1 January 2008 which are included in the Shareholders’ register of the Directorate of Taxes. The statistics are limited to shareholders identified by personal identification number (personal shareholders) who owned shares on 31 December 2007. The companies may have shareholders who cannot be identified by personal identification number (mostly other enterprises). A total of 932 617 persons were identified as shareholders in private and public limited companies. 241 205 shareholders were excluded. Most of these are identified by organisation number. 53 941 limited companies were excluded because they did not have personal shareholders or they were missing from the Shareholders’ register. The figures include all enterprises except enterprises involved in agriculture, forestry, fishing or public administration. As of January 2009, a new version of Eurostat’s industrial classification, NACE, has been in use to classify enterprises and establishments. In these statistics this entails a more detailed presentation of enterprises by economic activity in tables and in StatBank. |
