Most entrepreneurs are men
In 2007, more than eight out of ten entrepreneurs in private and public limited companies were men. In 2008, one out of three entrepreneurs in personally owned companies were women.
In limited companies in 2007, 83 per cent of the personal entrepreneurs were men. This is about the same level as the previous year. The lowest share of male entrepreneurs was within human health and social work. In this industry, men amounted to just above 60 per cent of the entrepreneurs.
Personally owned companies
In 2008, just above 29 000 personally owned companies were set up, an increase of almost 3 per cent compared with the previous year. The share of entrepreneurs with a non-Norwegian national background was 20 per cent, an increase of 6.4 per cent compared with the year before.
A large share of the enterprises was sole proprietorships and close to 35 per cent of the entrepreneurs were women. In the industry of human health and social work, over 63 per cent of the entrepreneurs were women.
High level of education amongst female entrepreneurs
In 2008, almost 44 per cent of the female entrepreneurs of personally owned companies had higher education. Only just 27 per cent of the male entrepreneurs had this level of education.
Amongst the entrepreneurs of limited companies in 2007, 43 per cent of the women and 37 per cent of the men had higher education.
In this statistics, the term entrepreneur of limited companies covers both private individuals and enterprises. In 2007, 16 724 private and public limited companies were set up in Norway. About 93 per cent of the enterprises are present in the stock statistics from 2007. In 2008, 13 805 private and public limited companies were set up in Norway, of which about 81 per cent are present in the stock statistics from 2008. The entrepreneur in personally owned companies is defined as the owner(s) of the enterprise at the time of set up. |
