Reduced profitability for Mainland Norway

Profitability measured by return on total assets for non-financial joint- stock companies in Mainland Norway went down from 6.4 per cent in 1999 to 5.9 per cent in 2000.

In total, the non-financial joint stock companies in Norway, including the continental shelf, increased profitability. Return on total assets rose from 6.4 per cent in 1999 to 8.3 per cent in 2000. The operating profit margin rose from 7.1 to 10.0 per cent.

Mainland Norway: Expenses increased more than income

There was a greater increase in operating expenses compared with operating income, which lead to a 3 billion decrease in operating profit from 1999 to 2000. In the same period income from subsidiaries, other group entities and associates almost doubled, and lead to and increase in net profit from NOK 81 billion to NOK 90 billion.

The growth in operating income combined with a decrease in operating profit for the non-financial joint- stock companies in Mainland Norway lead to a decrease in operating profit margin from 5.4 per cent in 1999 to 4.8 per cent in 2000. Return on total assets went down from 6.4 to 5.9 percent.

Oil and gas: Operating profit almost tripled

The operating profit for oil and gas was almost three times higher in 2000 than in 1999. Returns on total assets rose from 8.1 to 21.8 per cent, while operating profit margin rose from 22.0 to 37.6 per cent. The great increase in profitability must be seen in relation to the fluctuations in oil price. The annual average price on Brent Blend increased from USD 17.88 a barrel in 1999 to USD 28.39 a barrel in 2000.
