Large increase in assessed taxes

Total assessed taxes for non-personal taxpayers in 1999 amounted to NOK 58 billion, NOK 20.3 billion more than the year before. Operations on the continental shelf were the main factor in the increase.

Assessed taxes from operations on the continental shelf increased by all of NOK 14.6 billion, from NOK 10.1 billion in 1998 to NOK 24.7 billion the year after. Shipping companies had a small decline in assessed taxes during the same period.

Land-based activities

Total assessed taxes for land-based activities amounted to NOK 33.1 billion in 1999, an increase of NOK 5.8 billion from the year before. While assessed taxes for power companies fell by NOK 0.8 billion, assessed taxes for other land-based operations increased by NOK 6.5 billion during the period.

In tax position

Around half of all non-personal taxpayers have been in a tax position in recent years, i.e. they have been assessed taxes on their income and/or property. Fully 95 per cent of all non-personal taxpayers are ordinary joint-stock companies of which 48 per cent have been in a tax position. By comparison, 51 per cent of oil extraction companies were in a tax position in 1999, against only 43 per cent the year before. The corresponding figure for power companies is 86 per cent, 74 per cent for shipping companies and 99 per cent for savings banks.

Assessed taxes by industry

Excluding operations on the continental shelf , most taxpayers are found in wholesale and retail trade, hotels and restaurants and real estate, renting and business activities. Sixty-two per cent of all taxpayers are found in these industries, but they account for only 41 per cent of all assessed taxes. By comparison, taxpayers in the manufacturing, mining and quarrying made up 9 per cent of all taxpayers, but accounted for 15 per cent of total assessed taxes.
