A total of 8,625 traffic accidents were reported to the police in 1995. Altogether 11,756 persons were injured and 305 were killed in these accidents. The number of people injured was 4.5 per cent higher than in 1994 and 1.7 per cent higher compared to the average for 1990-1994. The number of fatalities in 1995 was up 22 from the year before, but was four fewer than the average for 1990-1994.
Seven drivers between the ages of 18 and 19 died in traffic accidents in 1995. We have to go back to 1969 to find fewer fatalities in this age group. The number of drivers injured in this age group was, however, slightly higher compared to 1994, but was lower than the average for the last five-year period (1990-1994). Several elderly drivers over the age of 80 were killed in 1995.
