The production fall in July is connected to the modest amounts of precipitation this summer and that the snowmelt in the mountains has yielded little water for power plant dams.
Norway's production of electricity plunged to 5,633 GWh in July, a 30 per cent decline compared to the same month last year. This is the lowest output for July since 1982. Much of Norway's consumption of electricity had to be met by imported power. Imports in July amounted to 1,461 GWh. Never before has so much power been imported in one month.
Higher consumption this year
Consumption of electricity so far this year has increased by about two per cent compared to the same period last year, despite increases in electricity prices. This is due, among other things, to the fact that temperatures this year have been colder than normal, while last year was warmer than usual. Another factor in Norway's higher consumption of electricity is the growth of the Norwegian economy, which has brought about a general increase in demand.
