In the autumn of 1995 Norway had 3,285 primary schools. This is a reduction of nearly 100 schools in the course of a five-year period. The change has, however, been different in the different types of schools. The number of combined primary and lower secondary schools has increased by 15, and there are only six fewer lower secondary schools. In the same five-year period the number of primary schools dropped by 113. In the course of the 1995-96 school year, a total of 38 schools were closed and 15 new ones were opened. Thirty of the closed schools had less than 20 pupils.
There are fewer and fewer primary schools in Norway. In the past few years both the number of combined primary and lower secondary schools and the number of lower secondary schools have stayed relatively constant, while there has been a marked reduction in the number of primary schools. At the same time the overall number of pupils in primary schools is increasing.
