Nearly 1,300 pornography-related offences have been recorded so far this year. This is 11 times as many as in the same period last year, when the figure was 113. The third quarter surge applied to all counties, but was the highest in Hordaland and Oslo, with respectively 111 and 238 recorded cases of illegal pornography. Only Akershus, Hedmark, and Møre og Romsdal counties had more than 20 reports. The increase was nonetheless relatively large in all counties because few or no cases of this type of crime were reported in the third quarter of last year.
Ten times as many violations of Norwegian pornography laws have been reported in the course of the three first quarters of this year compared to the same period last year. The biggest increase was seen in the third quarter, when 594 cases were recorded against 31 in the same quarter last year. There was also a large increase in reports of more serious sex crimes in the third quarter.
More assaults against children
Serious sex crimes were also up substantially in the third quarter. This was particularly true of unlawful sexual intercourse with minors, with 156 cases reported, up 49 per cent from 105 cases in the same quarter last year. Thirty-five of the crimes concerned children under 10, a 40 per cent increase. So far this year, 349 cases of unlawful sexual intercourse involving children under 14 have been recorded. This is 19 per cent more than in the same period last year. There was also a near doubling of indecent assaults on children under 16, with 74 such offences reported in the third quarter.
There was a general increase of felonies involving aggravated assault in the third quarter. The exception is murder: eight murders were recorded in the third quarter against 12 in the same quarter last year. However, attempted murders and cases of grievous bodily harm doubled, and 49 per cent more aggravated robberies, 19 per cent more rapes and attempted rapes and 13 per cent more incest cases were reported.
Small overall increase
The overall increase for all types of crimes was two per cent in the third quarter. Broken down into main categories, the largest groups - crimes against property and traffic crimes - declined, affecting the overall picture. For economic crime and other crimes against property as a whole the decline was nearly one per cent. Traffic crimes declined by four per cent, while the other groups increased. Sexual offences increased the most with 131 per cent, followed by vandalism with 25 per cent. The persistent strong increase in drug crimes eased off in the third quarter. The increase in reported drug trafficking offences has varied from 28 to 70 per cent in the last six quarters, while it was 10 per cent in the third quarter this year. Furthermore, working environment crimes increased by nine per cent, violent crime by seven per cent and environmental crimes by six per cent.
