The population will have increased by 22,000 in 1996, 500 more than the year before. Growth is due to a birth surplus of 17,000 (60,500 births minus 43,500 deaths), and net immigration of 5,000. Immigration totalled 26,000, emigration 21,000.
Norway's population is expected to reach 4,392,000 at the turn of the year, according to preliminary estimates.
Compared to 1995 there were 1,700 fewer deaths, but 1,700 more emigrants.
The calculations are only done for the entire country; there are no breakdowns for counties and municipalities (local governments).
