Compared to the same period last year, total lending increased by NOK 92 billion, or 11 per cent.
Lending to the public by Norwegian financial institutions increased in the course of the second quarter of this year by NOK 38 billion, twice as much as the increase in the first quarter of the year. Total lending currently amounts to NOK 958 billion.
Banks account for 90 per cent of the growth in lending, i.e. a volume increase of NOK 34 billion since the previous quarter. Finance companies increased lending during the same period by NOK 6 billion. Lending by state lending institutions and insurance companies totalled NOK 170 and NOK 50 billion, respectively, at the end of the second quarter. This represents a decline of NOK 2 billion since the previous quarter for both types of institutions.
Banks increasing market share
Banks claim the largest share of lending to the public, accounting for 66 per cent as of second quarter 1997, and compared to the same period last year they have increased their market share by almost three percentage points.
