Index of production, June 1998:

Clear decline in industrial output

Industrial output in June shrank by 1.7 per cent compared to May. Production is thus back to about the same average level as for the first quarter. On the other hand, oil and gas and power production expanded powerfully enough to boost the total production index by 1.1 per cent.
The long-term trend in the production index has now remained virtually flat for nearly a year, while the different parts show distinct variations. Oil and gas production clearly declined through the first quarter and into the second quarter, while industrial output peaked early in the second quarter.

Broad-based decline

The 1.7 per cent downturn in industrial output in June is a result of lower production in nearly all trades and industries since May. Contributing most toward the decline was the production slump in the food industry, wood processing, chemical industry and transportation industry. The only significant contributions toward an increase came from the publishing and graphics industry and production of oil platforms. However, the output decline in June is not greater than that most sectors by far can show definite growth from the first to the second quarter.
